2. General Rules for Parquet Maintenance

Solid wood parquet requires special attention when it comes to cleaning and maintenance, as it is more susceptible to deterioration. Always use gentle products on surfaces and remember that microfiber cloths are the most suitable for natural wood surfaces. Discover below several situations and effective methods to restore the flawless appearance of solid wood parquet!

  • How to reduce the effects of impact marks and/or scratches on wood parquet?

Although solid wood parquet is considered much more interesting than laminate due to its vintage appeal, it can deteriorate much faster than the latter. If the parquet in your home shows impact marks or scratches and you want to restore its original appearance, you should know these small but effective tricks.

Tip 1: Canola oil is the best remedy against marks and scratches on solid wood parquet. Create a solution by mixing one measure of white vinegar with two measures of canola oil or any other vegetable oil (preferably an aromatic one for added harmony, freshness, and cleanliness) and apply it over the damaged areas. Gently wipe the area with a soft cloth until the oil takes effect.

Tip 2: Online videos circulate featuring various foods that supposedly work wonders on wooden surfaces with minor damage. Walnut meat, for example, is an excellent ally against scratches because the oily plant has the same effect as the solution mentioned above. Take a walnut meat and gently rub the surface, then wipe away residue with a soft cloth and clean. The result will be exceptional!

Tip 3: In the case of older solid wood parquet, attention must be much greater, as it may need special substances to maintain its appearance and enhance surface care. It is best to use cleaning products based on oils or those containing this characteristic, but be careful not to leave the surface sticky or dirty at the end of the process.

  • How to remove stains from your flooring?

Stains on parquet represent a real problem and challenge. Not only do they look unsightly, but if not cleaned promptly, they can affect a large portion of the floor surface. Here are a few tips to get rid of stains on solid wood parquet.

Tip 1: If you notice that your parquet has stains, you can spray window cleaning solution and then clean the surface using a soft and damp cloth. Caution! This method works on recent stains, not very old ones.

Tip 2: In the case of pet urine stains, baking soda can be an effective solution for cleaning them. Apply a moderate amount of baking soda to the stain on the wood parquet and let it work overnight. If the stains are older, mix the baking soda with a little water, let it work for a few hours or overnight, and clean the parquet normally the next day.

Regardless of the type of parquet you have in your home, whether it is solid wood or stratified, you must follow several cleaning and hygiene rules:

  • Do not use hard, abrasive surfaces or those that leave marks and damage the parquet's appearance;
  • Pay attention to the composition of cleaning solutions you find in stores and avoid those containing ammonia;
  • Do not use too much water, squeeze out your mop or cloths well before cleaning parquet surfaces;
  • For optimal humidity levels, it is best to maintain a constant temperature between 18°C and 24°C in your home throughout the year. This will significantly extend the life of your floor. You can also use various tools, such as dehumidifiers, to remove excess moisture. Remember that solid wood parquet in particular, when in contact with large amounts of water or in an overly humid environment, tends to swell.
  • When moving furniture or rearranging, to avoid scratching the parquet, remember to cover it with plastic film and not with newspaper.
  • Also, if you are painting, it is advisable to use cardboard, but make sure the room is properly ventilated to prevent moisture from damaging the parquet.
  • Avoid using waxed products or those containing too much oil, even if certain specialists recommend them, because although they provide a pleasant appearance, they promote dust accumulation, make the parquet look sticky, as if it had not been cleaned.

So, these are the tips you can use for cleaning and maintaining your parquet. Don't forget to follow and pay attention to the specifications of each type of parquet and read the labels of commercial products before purchasing them!
